This is my 'How-To-Wear-Neon Guide'
I also strongly advocate for self expression. <Insert a paragraph about how we-live-in-a-society-that-is-
I won't say I don't follow trends, I do. Closely.
But if there is one trend that is dangerous, its anything with colour.
It started with colour blocking. Do you remember? when Spring Collection for 2011 was coming out. KENYANS, WE DO NOT HAVE SPRING. ITS SUNNY ALL YEAR ROUND. STOP TRYING TO FOLLOW TRENDS THAT SHOULDN'T EVEN EXIST.
This is something that is extremely annoying for me. But yes, we love bright colours! vivid neons, pretty pastels. its gorgeous.
But before you try and come off as a parot at an outdoor event, or a clown here's how I think it should be done...so I'm covering colour blocking and Neon you lucky peasants.
I had trouble breaking these downs because it should simply be one rule....SENSIBILITY.
Any way, here goes
1-PATTERNS
When matching outfits-or unmatching, for that matter, its always, always, best to stick to bold PLAIN prints..Dont come here in horizantal stripes in blue and vertical stripes in orange. i will shoot you. and plead provocation in a court of law. When it comes to neon, and this is a pet-peeve, do not mix colours. which I feel is the biggest mistake most of you ladies make. Do NOT for instance, mix yellow and green (Neons). Balance it out.
Also, mix up to three colours at most – anything more will make you look like a rainbow. Less is more darlings.
2-COLOUR WHEEL
What people seem to forget about colour blocking is that you need to wear something that is the exact opposite of a colour you have already picked, most of the time. Don't wear maroon and red and say you are colour blocking. (its called toning you plebian)So learn the basics of the colour wheel...you can even download it and see what will best go with that fluro yellow skirt you can't seem to remember buying.
Here is a basic colour match
yellow-orange
red-orange
purple-blue
If you're new to color blocking, try putting
an outfit together with clothes the colors in
the same color family such as pink, red, and
purple for a "tied together" look
my favorite happens to be neon and white. It can be as simple as a neon pink tank top and white skinnies for an afternoon out, and mix in orange pumps for the night. Simple. Pop
3-COMFORT
Wearing Neon is NOT for the faint hearted, and neither is colour blocking. You need to wear something that YOU are comfortable in. DO NOT wear something because a friend told you to. People who wear colours are bold and attention seeking; in a good way. Don't wear it if you tend to camouflage into your seat in class or into the walls at parties. You end up looking more of Ugly Betty and less of Jane By Design.
4-Hip-Po-POT-ammyy
Don’t wear bright pieces on your trouble areas!!! Kenyan ladies are blessed with curves and sometimes lumps too, its all good, <put your paws up baby, you were born this way> but anyway for instance, if you have a big belly, wear the brighter piece on your bottom and vice versa..you want to look good, and make people happy at the same time. Reminding us of your big belly does neither.Extra tip cause am feeling less hateful today; It is also advisable to accessorise with neutral colored jewelery like black, beige, gold and white . Unless you want to look flashy. Like Rita Ora. Trashy is never in sweethearts, unless its fishnets ;)
